Cape Town café staff traumatised as owner condemns ‘leaked’ shooting footage
A CCTV video of a fatal shooting in a café is circulating online as police search for two gunmen.
The owner of a Cape Town café where a man was killed in a brutal shooting has condemned the circulation of leaked CCTV footage of the attack on social media, saying it is forcing staff to relive the ordeal.
The man (33) was fatally shot while seated inside the café in the plush suburb of Table View on Monday (May 25).
In the video, he is seen seated at a table inside the café with his head down while looking at his laptop.
Staff members are standing behind him, while two women seated at a nearby table are looking at menus.
Everything appears normal until the two shooters storm the café.
The first shooter walks directly up to the man and begins shooting him.
The second shooter also opened fire. They briefly step back, then resume shooting, before fleeing with his belongings.
Staff hide for cover, and the women run out of the café.
Staff traumatised
The owner of the café, who did not want to be named, says his staff have been left traumatised by the shooting and are now being forced to relive the ordeal after footage of the incident was leaked on social media.
He adds that his heart goes out to the victim’s family, especially in light of the footage circulating online.
“Imagine the impact it will have on the victim’s family and the trauma it will cause them. Sharing the video was also bad for tourism in the area. I have received calls from people as far as England and Canada who watched the footage and asked if it was my restaurant,” he says
Investigations
“It is extremely frustrating. I am investigating who leaked the video because they need to be held accountable. This happens far too often in the country when such brutal crimes are committed,” he adds.
Captain FC Van Wyk, the spokesperson for the Western Cape police, says Table View police are investigating a case of murder.
Appeal
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the shooting incident are under investigation. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined, and arrests are yet to be made,” says Van Wyk.
He urges anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Jood Tieties, on 079 894 1257 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively, tip-offs can be reported anonymously on the MySAPS mobile app.
