Casual Day celebrates 3 decades: Photo competition winners announced

Casual Day 2024 was ‘a bold and successful journey’, says the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities.

The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) marked a monumental milestone in 2024 as it celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Casual Day campaign.

The campaign saw an unprecedented level of participation and thousands of powerful moments captured through the #ISeeYou photo competition.

The 2024 campaign’s theme, ‘I See You’, was a continuation of three decades dedicated to promoting inclusion and visibility for persons with disabilities across South Africa.

Since its inception in 1994, Casual Day has grown into a vibrant and influential movement that raises awareness and mobilises vital funds for equity and inclusion, reaching an estimated 3.3 million people with disabilities in South Africa.

“The overwhelming response to our 30th anniversary initiative sends a clear message: South Africans are passionately committed to creating a society where everyone is seen and valued,” says Therina Wentzel, NCPD’s national director.

“The thousands of photos shared across social media brought the ‘I See You’ message to life, and it was incredible to witness how deeply it resonated with communities nationwide, empowering and uplifting individuals along the way,” she adds.

Looking ahead, the NCPD is gearing up for an even more impactful Casual Day 2025.

The 31st anniversary will be announced with a new theme and will reveal how much was raised in 2024 at ‘Show and Tell’ events scheduled to begin in March.

“We are immensely grateful to every South African who supported us by purchasing a sticker, wearing our merchandise and sharing their stories. Your support continues to drive our work, transforming lives and building a more inclusive society for all.”
