Centurion beekeeper delivers baby in Clubview
Paul Marx clamped the umbilical cord using his Leatherman and cable ties.
The man who assisted a woman to give birth to her baby daughter on Friday afternoon says he will not be giving up his beekeeping job, Centurion Record reports.
Paul Marx had been on his way to his Valhalla home when he noticed some commotion next to the road near Leriba Lodge in Clubview.
Marx is a beekeeper who makes and supplies beekeeping equipment to stores in the area.
He said he had been on his way home from dropping off some equipment when he noticed the heavily pregnant mother lying on her back next to the road.
After noticing some men and another woman standing around the expectant mother he asked if an ambulance had been called.
“They told me that they had called an ambulance but were still waiting for it. But I saw we needed to act fast.”
The baby’s head had already started showing.
Marx’s brother, Chris, is a paramedic who stays in Upington.
“I called him and asked him to talk me through assisting the woman,” said Marx.
With the help of his brother and the mother’s brave efforts the baby was delivered right there and then.
It was at this time that a second woman, Mamokete Mafume, arrived at the scene.
“I had noticed the commotion just like Paul and wanted to see what was happening,” said Mafume.
She was just in time to see Marx clamp the umbilical cord using his Leatherman and cable ties.
With the help of Marx, Mafume put the mother and baby into her car. She then raced with them to the Unitas hospital.
There, hospital staff inspected the baby and mother. They found both the mother and baby to be in perfect health.
After the necessary procedures the mother and new-born were transferred to Kalafong hospital.
Meanwhile, Marx said he had been in contact with them since the incident.
The mother in particular wants to know from Marx what she should call the baby. His suggestion: Paula.
“They are both doing very well and I am very happy that everything worked out for the best,” said Marx.
“But one thing is certain: I will stick to working with bees.”
A third Good Samaritan was involved in assisting Marx and Mafume with the delivery. She is said to be the owner of the property where the birth took place.
She is kindly requested to contact Centurion Rekord as soon as possible.
