Chatsworth father knifed to death in front of family

The last words a Moorton man said to his wife as he drove her and their two children, aged 16 and 18, out of what they believe was an ambush situation in Arena Park, Chatsworth on Saturday, was ‘Baby, open the window, I can’t breathe’.

When 42-year-old Vishnu Dhaver, a tuckshop owner, found out that his 18-year-old son had been stabbed in the neck at his friend’s home, he immediately drove home and picked up his family, Rising Sun Chatsworth reports.

His wife, Beverly, 41, stated that he was upset that their son had gotten into an altercation as he was strict in his parenting and warned his son in the car as they drove to Arena Park to find out why he had been stabbed, and that he would be severely dealt with had the fault been his.

“When we got to the home of the alleged perpetrators, we were told that the person, who stabbed my son, was not there. We were invited inside the home but chose not to go as we could see that something was amiss. While we were speaking to one of the people from the house, another man ran up and attacked my husband. A scuffle ensued and a second person joined in the beating. My husband was beaten with rocks, bricks, stabbed with a bush knife in his back and stabbed across his face with a knife. My son tried to get his father away from the men but they held him back and forced him to watch the brutal attack. When my daughter tried to intervene as she could see the amount of blood her dad was losing, one of them punched her in her face. After she was punched, my husband managed to free himself from them and we jumped into the car and he drove off,” claimed Beverly, while fighting back tears.

She explained that her husband drove for about five metres but collapsed while driving and her son managed to bring the vehicle to a halt.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he passed away ten minutes after arrival.

Communications officer of the eThekwini Inner South cluster, Cpt Cheryl Pillay, confirmed that two suspects, aged 26 and 46, will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court soon.

“Chatsworth detectives worked around the clock to ensure that two suspects were arrested for a murder that had occurred in the Moorton area. It is alleged that on September 12, during an altercation, an 18-year-old victim was stabbed at a party in Moorton. The following day, the father of the victim attempted to establish the details surrounding his son’s stabbing. An altercation occurred in Arena Park where the father as fatally stabbed. Sadly, the father, aged 42, passed away at a local hospital. Police officers seized a bush knife and a knife that may have been used during the commission of the crime,” added Cpt Pillay.

A case of murder, as well as a counter charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, are being investigated at the Chatsworth SAPS.

Station commander of the Chatsworth SAPS, Brig Kevin James, sends a clear message to perpetrators, who take the law into their own hands, that police will leave no stone unturned until they are arrested and placed before the criminal justice system.

“The Chatsworth SAPS sympathises with the family of the deceased during their time of bereavement,” Brig James concluded.
