Chemical explosion in Johannesburg South leaves several injured

Several people were injured in a chemical explosion in Johannesburg South, with two in critical condition.

A chemical explosion occurred in Electron, Johannesburg South, prompting emergency services to respond at about 14:30 yesterday.

According to Comaro Chronicle, responders found multiple people with burn injuries on arrival. Two patients are in critical condition and were transported to Netcare Alberton, along with a third patient.

One staff member unaccounted for

ER24 Johannesburg South branch manager Faheem Eessop said one staff member remains unaccounted for, indicating a possible P4 situation.

Emergency response underway

FOX Security was on scene assisting with crowd control and scene management. Hazmat teams also responded and paramedics had to wait for instructions from the fire platoon commander on whether it was safe to enter the building.

The City of Johannesburg EMS fire teams and Hazmat units were conducting search-and-rescue operations.
