The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it is ready to proceed with the trial of a 56-year-old church elder accused of raping a 12-year-old girl, with the matter set to return to the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court in Johannesburg next week.

The accused is due back in court on September 3 for a pre-trial conference after making his first appearance in the High Court on Thursday, August 20, following the transfer of the case from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, reports Roodepoort Record.

He faces two counts of rape as well as charges of assault and abduction.

The alleged incident occurred on April 3 and sparked widespread public outrage after a video allegedly linked to the incident, together with footage of its aftermath, circulated rapidly on social media. The accused was arrested on April 4.

NPA communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole said the prosecution was ready to proceed when the matter returns to court.

“The state remains committed to presenting its case effectively and ensuring that justice is pursued in accordance with the law,” said Mohlatlole.

“The NPA continues to prioritise the prosecution of cases involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of children, recognising the devastating impact that such offences have on victims, their families and communities.”

She added that crimes against children remain a key priority for the NPA.

The accused remains in custody.
