City of Ekurhuleni owed millions by 4 Gauteng government departments

The municipality denied that government departments receive special treatment for debt compared to normal citizens.

Four Gauteng government departments are said to be owing the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) more than R137m.

These are the departments of education, human settlements, infrastructure development, agriculture rural development and land reform.

When asked for comment by the Alberton Record, spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said: “There is truth that the city is owed some money by government departments, save to say that there is no historical debt. The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform owes R7.5m but R6.6m is on an evaluation query.”

This publication also asked the city about perceptions that it might be treating government departments with leniency, compared to when it is owed by ordinary residents.

To this, Dlamini said: “There is no tolerance or preference for the provincial government within the city. The same principle applies to all departments and some of the schools are switched off, and the Nigel Correctional Service Facility was switched off.”

A breakdown of what each of these departments owes CoE:

  • Department of Education – R24 028 319
  • Department of Human Settlements – R7 485 742
  • Department of Infrastructure Development – R98 219 810
  • Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform – R7 520 702
