Community mourns murder of Middelburg businessman during home invasion
A prominent businessman and family man was gunned down yesterday afternoon in his home in Eastdene, a suburb of Middelburg.
The Eastdene community in Middelburg is mourning the murder of businessman Ahmed Mohamed who was shot and killed during an armed robbery at around 15:00 yesterday afternoon at his residence in Oos Street.
Mohamed was gunned down in the safety of his home and his sister assaulted by armed robbers.
Mohamed’s sister, Maimoonah, who lives on the same premises as Ahmed and his wife and kids, told the Middelburg Observer that a group of suspects entered the property where they first accosted live-in employees who were bathing at the time.
The suspects raised their firearms at the employees before entering into the main house where Mohamed was home with his wife.
Maimoonah heard screaming followed by gunshots, which spurred her into running from her residence towards the house.
The armed men then accosted her, hitting her in the face with a firearm and wrestling with her.
She sustained significant abrasions to her face during the altercation.
The suspects then fled with Mohamed’s black Toyota Etios, with registration FVC 769 MP. The vehicle is marked by hail damage and is equipped with black steel rims without rim covers.
According to members of the Noodroep Radiogroep Sector 3, a silver Polo was also picked up on surveillance footage, and is believed to be the suspect vehicle. Eight suspects were reportedly involved.
Mohamed, the owner of ABC Couriers, was described as a pillar who was actively involved in community work, including the CPF and Middelburg Muslim School where the youngest of his children are enrolled as learners.
The school, upon hearing of his murder, has since issued a circular informing of the postponement of their athletics event today, in respect to his family.
Mohamed is survived by his wife, three sons, two daughters and his sister.
Any sightings of the suspects or stolen vehicle are to be reported to the SAPS.
