‘Councillor’ caught with R82 000 worth of dagga
The Ladysmith Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal has today granted R4 000 bail to a 33-year-old man believed to be a councillor after he was arrested for possession of dagga worth about R82 000.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police were conducting a stop-and-search operation yesterday when they stopped the suspect’s vehicle and discovered 41 kilograms of dagga stored in five plastic bags. The suspect was arrested, Ladysmith Gazette reported.
“During a preliminary investigation, it was found the suspect is alleged to be a Bergville area councillor,” Naicker added.
In a separate incident, a woman was arrested after she was allegedly found in possession of about 70kg of dagga.
Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said the suspect, 42, was arrested when the police’s tactical response team raided a property in Tafelsig after receiving information from the community about suspected drug dealing occurring on the premises.
“The TRT, which was busy with crime prevention duties, received information from the community about drug dealing, and upon searching the premises they found large bags filled with dagga in a locked room,” Kinana said in a statement.
