Durban Central SAPS have made several arrests in the wake of the Durban floods that left parts of the city damaged last week. Crimes range from aggravated robbery, possession of stolen property, drug possession and loitering.

Spokesperson for Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo, said a business owner was robbed at knife point on Friday while 13 suspects were arrested in Durban Central and Morningside on Monday.

A suspect (20) was arrested on Friday for aggravated robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon after a robbery on Matthew’s Meyiwa Road.  After interviewing the complainant, SAPS conducted an extensive search in the vicinity of the crime scene.

“Members patrolled the area along with the complainant who positively identified one of three suspects. It was alleged that the three suspects had earlier robbed the complainant of his cellphone by threatening him with knives. The suspect was searched and a cellphone was recovered by the members, as well as an okapi knife,” says Maphumulo.

On the same day, a suspect (22) was arrested on Joe Slovo Street for possession of car breaking implements and possession of suspected stolen property.

Maphumulo says members were approaching a suspicious brown Datsun Go when five occupants who were in the vehicle fled in different directions.

One suspect was caught, and police found a remote jammer, screwdriver, knife and suspected stolen handbag in the vehicle.

“The vehicle was identified as an e-hailing taxi and released to the owner as it was not involved in any crime. The arrested suspect is a notorious gang leader of remote jammers who resides in Clermont,” says Maphumulo.
