‘Dangerous’ suspect re-arrested after escaping from police cells

One of the three dangerous suspects who escaped from Bellair police holding cells in July, has been reportedly re-arrested at his mother’s house in Kwamakutha, KwaZulu-Natal.

Bellair police spokesperson Warrant Officer Derek Freddy Vijiam said the suspect, Vusi Gumede was apprehended at his mother’s residence in Plagent Road in the early hours of Saturday morning, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

“The remaining two suspects, Bheki Nkosi and Siyabonga Dlamini, are still at large.

“Gumede was initially detained by Chatsworth police detectives for murder. He was placed in custody at Bellair police station for incarceration together with the two other detainees,” added Vijiam.

“Whilst in custody, he escaped together with Bheki Nkosi, who was arrested for the illegal possession of firearm and Siyabonga Dlamini, who was arrested for contravention of Section 36,” said Vijiam.

Vijiam added Gumede was taken in for questioning. Investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, five awaiting prisoners escaped from custody in Ritavi police station, near Tzaneen in Limpopo, last month.

Spokeswoman Ronel Otto said the five escaped by cutting through the roof fence of the exercise yard.

“Two of them were arrested. They are on trial for serious offences such as murder, rape and robbery, and therefore very dangerous,” she said.

Otto said Lazarus Moseamedi was on trial for the murder of a police officer and attempted murder of another officer and several cases of armed robbery. Nkwana faced charges of attempted murder, Mokhabudi for murder, robbery and vehicle theft.
