Dead baby found at sewage plant

A foetus that was still attached to the umbilical cord and placenta was discovered at a sewage pump station near Kinross, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday.

According to municipal workers, the baby boy was found while cleaning was being done at the station, Ridge Times reported.

“We thought it was a dumped cat or dog and were stunned to see it was a human being,” one of the workers said.

Police suspected it was an illegal abortion. A forensics team was later called on to the scene.

In December, a 34-year-old woman was arrested for trying to dispose of the body of a newborn baby in the north of Pretoria.

According to police, the arrest came after a tip-off from a resident.

Police at the time also said DNA tests would be done to find out if she was related to the child.

A few days later, another newborn baby boy was found dead and abandoned at a dumping site alongside Newlands West Drive in KwaZulu-Natal.

The baby was spotted by a resident, who immediately contacted the police.
