Double killing in Northern Cape as man allegedly shoots wife and son

A domestic dispute near Kathu allegedly escalated into a fatal shooting that left two family members dead and another injured.

A man is under police guard at a Northern Cape hospital after he allegedly shot dead his wife and son before turning the gun on himself in Olifantshoek near Kathu yesterday.

Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the spokesperson for the Northern Cape police, says the 54-year-old man and his 51-year-old wife were at a friend’s house when an argument broke out between them.

“Their 26-year-old son reportedly arrived and intervened,” adds Ehlers.

She explains that it is alleged the man fired several shots, killing his wife and son while injuring a 36-year-old woman, who was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Ehlers says the suspect is reported to have then fled to another friend’s home, where he allegedly sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“He was transported to hospital, where he was placed under arrest and remains under police guard,” she adds.

Olifantshoek police are investigating two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

Investigations are ongoing.
