Driver remains in custody after Outeniqua Pass collision kills 2

A crowded court roll and an incomplete bail profile delayed a bail application in the George Magistrate's Court.

A driver arrested after a collision on the Outeniqua Pass claimed the lives of two Waboomskraal women is facing two counts of culpable homicide and remains in custody pending a bail application, reports the George Herald.

Blaine Vosloo (30) appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court today (November 3).  The case was postponed until Thursday (November 5) to allow the investigating officer to complete his bail profile.

The court heard that the charges currently fall under Schedule 1 and that the information required for his bail application was not yet complete.

However, the application may not be heard on Thursday because six other bail applications take priority on the court roll. It will proceed only if time allows.

Collision near Blanco turn-off claims 2 lives

The charges stem from a collision between a double-cab Isuzu bakkie and a Chrysler Crossfire near the Blanco turn-off at about 11:40 on Sunday (November 1).

Marie van Zyl (72) sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital, where she was later declared dead. Leona Ronetta Jacobsohn (68), who was travelling with Van Zyl in the bakkie, sustained critical injuries and died in hospital yesterday (November 2).

Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies previously confirmed that the driver of the Chrysler was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Outeniqua Pass records previous fatal collisions

The collision is the latest fatal crash reported on the Outeniqua Pass. In January, one person died in a collision between a double-cab bakkie and a sedan on the pass. Four other people were taken to hospital, two of them in critical condition.

The circumstances surrounding Sunday’s collision remain under investigation.
