Durban man dies in alleged botched hijacking
In the third fatal shooting this year, bystanders say Rodney Naidoo was shot for no reason when he stopped to buy vegetables.
A man was shot and killed in Bayview in Chatsworth, Durban when he tried to flee armed men who confronted him in what is believed to be a botched hijacking.
Bystanders on the scene claim that the victim, Rodney Naidoo (43), stopped to buy vegetables on Lenny Naidu Drive, when he was approached by armed men. His attackers opened fire when he tried to drive off, causing Naidoo to lose control of his vehicle and crash through a nearby wall.
Bayview SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Collin Chetty, says the incident happened at about 08:20 on Saturday and that police are looking for three suspects.
Amawele Emergency Services spokesman, Siven Subramodey, says he was called to the scene.
“The accident response unit arrived at the scene within minutes to find the victim slumped over in the driver’s seat. Upon inspection, we found that the driver had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head but was still breathing.
“Advanced life support paramedics were called out while we took the patient out of the car and stabilised him. The victim was transported to hospital in a critical condition, however, he sadly succumbed to his injuries in the hospital trauma room,” explains Subramodey.
This is the third shooting to occur in Bayview this year. The first two incidents are believed to be drug related.
Bayview police officers are currently investigating a case of murder and are searching for the suspects. Anyone who can assist in the investigation, can contact Warrant Officer Dean Naidoo on 031 405-7204 or 083-787-8623.
