East Rand family murders: Kempton Park man abandons bail bid

Anton Bouwer is accused in the quadruple murder of his parents, his stepdaughter, as well as a domestic worker.

Businessman and quadruple murder accused Anton Bouwer yesterday abandoned his bail application in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

This was confirmed by his attorney, advocate Hugo van der Westhuizen, who said his client has opted not to continue with a bail application.

When the Benoni City Times asked why this decision was reached, Van Der Westhuizen indicated ‘there are various reasons’.

The matter was postponed to May 15 for further investigation. Bouwer will remain in custody.

The murders

Bouwer was arrested on January 22 after his parents Robert (78) and Bettie (73) were killed in a shooting spree at their Bredell home in Kempton Park, allegedly by him.

His stepdaughter Natasha (23) and domestic worker Elizabeth Mahlangu (56) was also shot and killed – at a home in Fairleads, Benoni – also allegedly by him.

Bouwer’s wife, Adélle (43), was another victim of the shooting incident. She was airlifted to a local hospital, and survived.

It is reported that Bouwer turned the gun on himself at the Fairleads home, but he survived and was hospitalised.
