Elderly man shoots robber dead

An elderly man shot and killed a house robber in the early hours of Friday morning in the Allen Grove area of Kempton Park, on the East Rand.

It is alleged the suspect and his alleged accomplices had just robbed the man and his wife in their home, Kempton Express reported.

“We can confirm that a case of house robbery is currently under investigation. It is alleged that four robbers entered the Pepperboom Street home at about 3.15am, tied up an elderly couple and ransacked their home,” Kempton Park Police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said.

As the suspects left the house, the elderly man managed to free himself, got his firearm and fatally wounded one of the suspects. His partners in crime then fled the scene, leaving him behind.

Investigations into the case continue.

In April, cases of armed robbery and murder were opened against a man who allegedly shot a suspect during a robbery in Bezuidenhout Valley Park, Johannesburg.

Four armed men allegedly approached five male friends who were socialising in Bezuidenhout Valley Park and held them up.

Constable Mpho Mashakane from Hillbrow Cluster said the armed men searched the victims, but one refused to be searched.

Mashakane added the robbers managed to take a wallet and four cellphones from the victims who were searched.

“While they were searching through the vehicle, the victim who had refused to be searched pulled out a gun and shot the robber who was carrying the firearm. The other three suspects fled the scene,” Mashakane said.

The suspect was declared dead on the scene.
