eMalahleni man recovering in hospital after hands chopped off

A man whose hands were chopped off during a brutal attack said he told his attackers they had the wrong man.

For Dumisani Mhlangu (30), an easy action like scratching his itchy nose is something he can no longer do.

Mhlangu’s life changed when his hands were chopped off during a brutal attack in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, last Wednesday.

Vosman Police Station commander Brigadier Lindani Ndlovu says mob justice cannot be ruled out.

Mhlangu was attacked and disabled for the rest of his life by six men believed to be foreign nationals. The men kidnapped him while he was walking along the Kromdraai Road towards Extension 16.

Recovering in Witbank Hospital, Mhlangu told Witbank News that his attackers accused him of stealing a battery from a local church.

He paused several times during the interview in an attempt to get his emotions under control.

“I kept on pleading and telling them they had the wrong man. I prayed that God would protect me as I was sure they were going to kill me,” he said.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the men cut off both of Mhlangu’s hands.

Police opened a case of attempted murder and are in pursuit of the men.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Muntu Mbatha at 082 600 8537 or call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. Information can also be sent via the MySAPS App.
