Emergency services find no trace of children reportedly swept away in Pretoria
Emergency services found no signs of three children reportedly swept away in Sunnyside flash floods as police continue their investigation.
Emergency services said a search for three children reportedly swept away in flash floods in Sunnyside, Pretoria, yielded no signs of the missing children, and police are continuing their investigation.
Pretoria Rekord reports that, according to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gauteng station commander Gerhard Potgieter, the crew was activated at 06:05 yesterday.
This follows an eyewitness report of at least three children being caught in flash floods and swept away down flooded waterways near the Cilliers Street and Walkers Spruit crossing in Sunnyside.
“NSRI Gauteng and NSRI Witbank swift water rescue swimmers joined the SAPS, Tshwane Police Water Policing and Diving Services, Sedibeng Police K9 Search and Rescue, Ekurhuleni Police K9 Search and Rescue, SARZA, and Tshwane Fire and Rescue Services.”
He says a Gauteng Traffic Police helicopter joined the search.
“Four search teams were deployed from the reported entry point at Cilliers Street and Walkers Spruit, with search efforts reaching the N4 Freeway at the Apies River crossing.”
Despite an extensive air, water, and riverbank search operation throughout yesterday, no further information or signs of the missing children were found.
Potgieter says there remain no signs of the children, who are suspected to have been swept away, and police are investigating.
“Police have launched an investigation, and at this stage, no missing persons reports that may be related to this case remain open.”
