Eskom cables to aluminium pots: Woman appears in Mpumalanga court
Pots believed to have been made from smelting cables belonging to the power utility were found in the woman's possession.
Nombango Claudia Mogiba (52) appeared in the Calcutta Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face a charge of possession of stolen Eskom property.
During her arrest earlier that same day, the Hawks and other investigation units found her in possession of copper cables and tarpaulins.
The Hawks responded to information regarding a house in Mkhuhlu where copper cables were allegedly kept and transported to late at night.
According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, Mogiba was informed about a search warrant upon arrival and granted the team permission to search the premises.
“During the search, aluminium cables suspected to be from Eskom were found on the premises. They were covered by a tarpaulin belonging to Transnet. More rolls of aluminium cables were found next to the house, also covered by a tarpaulin.
“An Eskom official was summoned to the scene and identified the cables as Eskom property. A Fidelity Guards investigator identified the black tarpaulins as Transnet property. A lot of aluminium pots were found in and outside the house, suspected to have been manufactured from the smelting of stolen cables,” Sekgotodi explains.
The case was postponed to tomorrow for a formal bail application. Mogiba has been remanded in custody.
