Eskom warns of stage 6 load-shedding

The national power supplier is struggling to keep the lights on amid an ongoing illegal strike.

There is a risk that stage 6 load-shedding will be implemented tonight, warned Eskom CEO André de Ruyter during a media briefing this morning.

According to De Ruyter protest action at the power utility has intensified overnight.

“Being winter the load forecast for this evening is quite high – 31 990 MW of demand. We have capacity available at this stage of 27 124 MW. That creates a capacity shortfall.”

According to De Ruyter the power utility has been consuming a considerable amount of diesel over the last few days. About 85 million litres of diesel has been burnt so far this month.

COO Jan Oberholzer said at least ten units have tripped. If these units cannot be returned to service, stage 6 load-shedding will probably be implemented from 17:00.

“We find ourselves in an extremely difficult situation,” said Oberholzer.
