Expect more of the same from the ANC
The ANC adjourned its 55th national conference this week, despite some items remaining on the agenda. We asked political commentator Solly Moeng what can be expected from the party.

Expect more of the same from the ANC, says political commentator Solly Moeng.
“The party is inherently corrupt and inept, and they will never change. They proved it by electing the same corrupt cabal as part of the top seven, instead of opting for a regenerated leadership eager to stamp out corruption.”
Moeng’s reaction follows the ANC’s 55th national conference that took place from December 16 to 20 at Nasrec in Johannesburg, at which President Cyril Ramaphosa survived an onslaught by the party’s ‘radical economic transformation’ faction to retain the presidency of the party.
The ANC announced yesterday that the conference would adjourn early – despite not all business being addressed. It will resume on January 5 in a ‘hybrid form’. While the top seven positions were made public yesterday, the 80-member national executive committee (NEC) is yet to be announced, nor have certain party policies been dealt with.
Moeng says the early adjournment is a ‘sign of a party that is ready to die’.
He is critical of the fact that many of the top seven have been implicated in scandals and believes that the NEC will also have too many corrupt members within its midst.

Both the contenders for the position of ANC president are implicated in irregularities – Ramaphosa in the Phala Phala scandal, in which foreign currency was hidden in a couch and then stolen without it being reported; and Zweli Mkhize, the former minister of health, who was forced to resign when the Special Investigating Unit placed him at the centre of the Digital Vibes controversy.
Moeng blames ANC supporters for the status quo. “ANC members at branch and other levels are South Africans like the rest of us. They too must feel the effects of state capture and other forms of corruption. How do they then impose criminal suspects on us?” he wants to know.
Moeng laughs when asked whether there is a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ ANC. “Nominating and voting for individuals with dark criminal and ethical clouds hanging over their heads rewards what they stand for and encourages arrogance and impunity!”
