Fatal Roodepoort road rage attack: Suspect hands himself over
Details about what exactly happened during the incident are still unclear.
An alleged road rage incident on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Handicap Road in Ruimsig wherein one person was shot and killed, brought traffic to a standstill on Friday (March 1).
A man who handed himself over to authorities after the incident has been released after the court referred his docket back to police for further investigation.
According to BCI Security’s operations manager Lionell Gaffney, the incident occurred at about 14:40 on Friday and the exact circumstance is not yet known.
“Reports of a shooting circulated on our emergency groups, and we along with various other local security companies responded immediately, as did various ambulance services,” says Gaffney.
“Upon arrival, it was established that it was a road rage incident, and one person was declared dead at the scene.”
Hendrik Potgieter Road was closed to traffic by police as a crime scene between Doreen and Viljoen Road near the Sasol service station, causing significant problems for the busy Friday afternoon traffic.
The road was reopened shortly after 17:00.
Meanwhile, Roodepoort Record has received reports that the alleged perpetrator of the shooting had driven from the scene of the shooting to the Honeydew Police Station, where he handed himself over.
He was arrested and has since appeared in court, where his case was allegedly removed from the court roll and referred back to the police for further investigation.
The suspect has since been released pending further investigation by the police.
The newspaper made numerous attempts shortly after the incident occurred for information regarding this incident from the police’s communications officers Sergeant Kholo and Captain Tsietsi Phora, but none was received by the time of publishing.
