Fatal Roodepoort road rage incident: ‘Shooter’ released
Police have to gather more evidence against the man, who handed himself over to police before he will be charged.
A man suspected of shooting and killing another during a road rage incident in Ruimsig and then going to the police to report the incident was released from custody after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided there was not enough evidence to charge him.
The incident happened on Friday. According to West Rand Police spokesperson Captain Tsietsi Phora, the incident started in Muldersdrift, where one driver became upset at another’s driving. The two ended up on Handicap Road in Roodepoort where they both got out of their vehicles and an argument ensued.
“The suspect took out his licensed firearm and fired a shot at the 40-year-old victim, killing him,” says Phora. “He then climbed into his car and drove to the Honeydew Police Station, where he reported the matter.”
Phora says the suspect was arrested and detained but was released after the NPA decided not to place the case on the court roll due to insufficient evidence.
“The case has been temporarily withdrawn, pending the collection of further evidence. Once this is complete, the case will be registered again,” Phora concludes.
Questions have been sent to the NPA, and their response will be added when received.
