Fatal shark attack at Plettenberg Bay

The NSRI asked the public to be careful along the Southern Cape coastline after the incident.

A Plettenberg Bay man succumbed to injuries yesterday after an incident with a shark.

Just after 14:00, Plettenberg Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteers were alerted of the incident on Sanctuary Beach.

The victim was retrieved from the water, but had succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased on the scene.

“On arrival on the scene the body of an adult male, believed to be a local man, was located and recovered from the water, at the back surf line, onto an NSRI rescue craft. The body was brought to the NSRI Plettenberg Bay rescue station,” the NSRI said in a statement.

According to the NSRI, the family of the man were in the care of police and counsellors.

“Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased man.”

The NSRI and Bitou Municipality appealed to bathers, paddlers, sailors and boaters in Plettenberg Bay and along the Southern Cape coastline to exercise caution following this fatal incident.
