Father and son saved after near drowning in eMdloti, KZN

A FATHER and son were saved in a near-drowning incident in eMdloti on Saturday afternoon.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, reports indicate that a 5-year-old boy and his 35-year-old father were pulled into the water by a freak wave.

“Members of the public spotted the two battling to stay afloat and immediately swam to their assistance. eThekwini Lifeguards, Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue as well as the NSRI station Station 41 had responded to the scene. Both father and son were assessed and transported to hospital for symptoms of a non-fatal drowning,” he said.

Rescue personnel also responded to a near-drowning in uMhlanga close to the lagoon.

According to Herbst, a 24-year-old woman was pulled into the water by the current and was rescued by a member of the public.

“A member of the public heard her calls for help and jumped in to rescue her. He managed to rescue her just as she became submerged. The lifeguards were also informed of the incident and assisted in the rescue. She is in a moderate condition and was transported through to a local hospital,” he said.

Just hours earlier, a man, believed to be in his 20s, drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming near the uMgeni River mouth.
