Fire destroys homes in KZN

Two families were left homeless after a fire rapidly spread in an informal settlement in Mhlasini, north of Durban.

A fire destroyed two dwellings in an informal settlement in Mhlasini, north of Durban, yesterday, reports The Witness.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) responded after receiving reports of a fire spreading rapidly between structures.

On arrival, officers were told by the homeowner that he had locked his wood-and-iron dwelling and walked to a nearby shop.

When he returned, the structure was already engulfed in flames.

The fire spread to a neighbouring dwelling due to windy conditions and a lack of water, leaving both homes gutted.

No injuries were reported.

The fire department later arrived and extinguished the blaze.
