Former Western Cape SAPS media liaison officer re-arrested in firearm case
Busie Dyani failed to appear in court over a 2019 firearm fraud case and is now expected to appear in a Paarl court on Monday.
The Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crime team in Bellville has re-arrested Busie Linda Dyani (50) on a warrant of arrest for failure to appear in court.
It is reported that on May 6, 2019, while on duty and in full police uniform, Dyani, then the Mfuleni SAPS media liaison officer, went to a registered firearms dealer in Stellenbosch.
She allegedly produced a false firearm licence to collect a Musgrave hunting rifle. Dyani had purchased the firearm on April 9, 2019 and paid R9 000.
The dealer became suspicious as the licence was issued to a security company, but the purchase was for a hunting rifle.
The matter was escalated to the Hawks, who established that Dyani misrepresented the security company and claimed she was the responsible person. She was arrested and made a court appearance in Stellenbosch on May 9, 2019.
A further probe led to the arrest of Makhenke Sokoyi (39), who allegedly provided the false firearm licence to Dyani.
The trial commenced on July 6, 2021 at the Stellenbosch Regional Court, but Dyani failed to appear as it continued.
On Wednesday, Dyani was traced in the Eastern Cape and arrested. She appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was transported back to Cape Town, where she will appear in the Paarl Regional Court on Monday.
Sokoyi remains in custody on an unrelated matter. – SAnews.gov.za
