Four children died after being trapped in a freezer in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

The children, three boys aged 4 as well as a 6-year-old girl, suffocated to death last Thursday after being trapped in a freezer stored in an outside building of a house in the area, Highvelderreported.

Police spokesperson Captain Carla Prinsloo said initial reports indicated that a relative of one of the children had cleaned the freezer earlier that morning and left the door open for it to dry.

The relative apparently went to repair a motor vehicle on the premises and later returned to close the freezer door.

He noticed it was already closed and when he opened it he found the children inside.

All four children were rushed to hospital and were later pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made; however, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In April, three children suffocated after they were left inside their parents’ car n Mahikeng in the North West.

The children, aged four, 6 and 10, were left inside the car after their parents went to a chemist to collect medication for the youngest child.

The children were rushed to Victoria Hospital and certified dead on arrival.
