Free State cashier arrested after allegedly defrauding business of over R500 000

The 44-year-old woman allegedly fabricated bank payments and cash receipts seven times in 2019.

A cashier at an abattoir in Harrismith in the Free State recently appeared in the local Magistrate’s Court for fraud, forgery, and uttering.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli, the suspect, Madelein Hugo, received bail of R2 000.

Hugo (44) is accused of stealing her employer’s money and falsifying cash receipts and bank payments seven times in 2019, according to Mohobeleli.

Mohobeleli explained in a statement that the corporation lost more than R500 000.

“She was apprehended on June 12 members of the Free State Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Bethlehem, who were acting on an arrest warrant,” said Mohobeleli.

Hugo will be back in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on September 5.
