Gauteng driver behaviour at ‘undesirable levels’
“Motorists are urged to drive with caution in order to save the lives of road users."
Driver behaviour in the province was at “undesirable levels”, with speeding and drunk driving among the factors, the Gauteng traffic police have warned.
Urging motorists to exercise caution while driving on the roads, the provincial traffic policing unit said it was “critical” for road users to adhere to the rules of the road at all times, as many road fatalities were reported as a result of reckless and negligent driving on the roads in the province.
“Driver behaviour on our roads is not at a desirable level [as] majority of road fatalities are as a result of excessive speeding, reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol,” spokesperson Sello Maremane said.
“Motorists are urged to drive with caution in order to save the lives of road users. We wish to encourage all road users to be cautious on Gauteng roads by adhering to the prescribed road safety regulations.”
“Let us ensure that we are responsible on the roads,” he said.
Maremane said law enforcement would conduct road safety activations in a bid to tackle the bad behaviour which contributed to crashes and fatalities on the roads.
The road safety activations included roadblocks which would focus on unroadworthy vehicles and drunk drivers as they were some of the major contributors to fatal crashes.
