Gauteng hit by cash-in-transit robbery as KZN heist suspects sought

A cash-in-transit robbery in Braamfischerville has triggered a manhunt, shortly after a separate N2 heist in Durban left two guards wounded.

Police have launched separate manhunts after two cash-in-transit robberies unfolded this morning in KZN and Gauteng, with two security guards shot and wounded in one of the incidents.

Rising Sun reports that police in KZN launched a manhunt for at least eight suspects following a brazen cash-in-transit robbery on the N2 southbound.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a cash delivery truck was travelling along the N2 when suspects, reportedly in two vehicles, opened fire on the armoured vehicle and forced it to a stop.

“Police in KZN are on the lookout for at least eight suspects who robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money on the N2 highway southbound on Wednesday morning,” said Netshiunda.

He added that two security guards were shot and injured during the attack.

“The suspects fled the scene with several bags of money, however, the safe remained intact,” he said.

Public urged to help

Netshiunda urged members of the public to assist police with information.

“Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact the nearest police station or call our Crime Stop number: 08600 10111,” he said.

Emergency services described a chaotic scene when they arrived shortly after the shooting.

Security guards shot

Advanced Life Support Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were dispatched to the incident just after 05:30.

“Initial reports were that multiple security officials had been shot. Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos,” said Jamieson.

He confirmed that two guards had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“One of the guards had sustained critical injuries and immediately, the Netcare 911 helicopter was activated to assist in rapidly transporting the man to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required. The second security official had sustained serious injuries and was stabilised at the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.

The N2 southbound was closed from the M7 Edwin Swales off-ramp for several hours to allow emergency responders and investigators to work on the scene.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area while investigations continued.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the robbery.

The incident comes almost exactly a year after another cash-in-transit heist occurred on the same stretch of the N2 in February 2025, raising fresh concerns about the safety of major transport routes in the province.

Gauteng robbery

Meanwhile, Soweto Urban reports a cash-in-transit robbery occurred in Braamfischerville, on the far western edge of Soweto, Johannesburg, with an undisclosed sum of money reported stolen.

According to initial reports, the suspects used three getaway vehicles to escape the scene, prompting authorities to launch a manhunt.

At this stage, no further details have been confirmed, including whether anyone was injured or if any arrests have been made.

Investigations are ongoing as police work to track down the suspects.

Officials are expected to provide updates as the situation develops. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
