Girl, 7, ‘raped’ while grandmother out drinking

No arrests have been made after a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped at her home while her grandmother was out drinking in Sibongile, KwaZulu-Natal.

It is alleged the grandmother left the children sleeping in the house on the corner of Miya and Madondo streets, on Saturday, Northern Natal Courier reported.

When she went back to the house to check on the children, she noticed that one of the little girls was missing. As she left the house to search for her, she found the girl walking towards the house, shivering.

The victim told her grandmother that a man took her from the house to a nearby bush and raped her.

She was reportedly rushed to hospital for tests, and a case was opened.

Investigations by the the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit are under way.

Police communications officer Captain V. Mbense issued a strong warning to the community that they should always be vigilant of their children’s whereabouts.

“Make sure there is an elder to look after them and do not leave them alone,” he said.

Last month, a 15-year-old girl was abducted from her home on Glenwood Road and allegedly raped in a nearby field by three men in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Leonard Hlati said the three suspects were arrested and taken in for questioning.
