There was a mini-war in a Sabie, Mpumalanga, plantation yesterday when the police K9 Unit received information about a group of suspicious-looking, blanket-wearing people.

When the police approached the group of about 15 people, suspected to be Lesotho nationals, the group fired shots at the police.

This resulted in the police retaliating and a gun battle ensued.

According to information, the group ran deeper into the plantation and escaped.

The police later discovered a huge arsenal of various calibre firearms, including an AK47 automatic assault rifle and a .38 special revolver, as well as various calibre rounds of ammunition in the plantation.

The police counted the number of rounds of ammunition found at the scene – 500 7.62mm AK47 rounds, 1 065 7.62mm AK47 tracer rounds, 65 9mm rounds, 177 7.62mm R1 rounds, and 184 .38 special rounds.

No injuries were reported.
