Hawks arrest suspected cop killer in Mpumalanga

Investigations into the death of a warrant officer last year has led to an arrest being made in Evander.

A 30-year-old man, suspected of a cop killing, was arrested yesterday during a joint collaboration by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s (Hawks) Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit based in Secunda and the Secunda K9 Unit.

The arrest follows the murder of a policeman Warrant Officer Hlatshwayo last year.

Hlatshwayo was attacked and shot while entering his home on February 18, 2022.

He was taken to the Piet Retief Provincial Hospital and then transferred to Mediclinic Highveld in Trichardt where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigating team followed up on information of the whereabouts of one of the suspects. This led them to Evander.

The arrested suspect will appear in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court soon.

According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, more arrests are expected.
