Health department concerned over increase in Gauteng Covid-19 cases

The Gauteng Department of Health said it was concerned over a 6% increase in the number of active Covid-19 cases in various areas in the province.

This comes after the country moved into lockdown level 1 last week Monday.

Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni were among the areas that contributed to the increase in active cases.

“It is important that we emphasise to the public that the fight against Covid-19 is far from over. We want to caution communities that we need to continue adhering to non-pharmaceutical interventions,” said Gauteng Acting MEC for Health Jacob Mamabolo.

“We all have to play our part to protect ourselves and those around us. There is still no vaccine. The only way we can contain the spread of Covid-19 is through wearing of masks, keeping social distance and hand sanitisation including adhering to level 1 guideline as provided by the government.”

On Sunday, Gauteng’s overall Covid-19 positive cases climbed to 219 039 with 195 417 recoveries and 4 203 deaths thus far, according to figures published by the Department of Health.

This saw the province having about 19 419 active cases.

Gauteng recorded 178 new cases on Sunday.

The Department of Health said out of 139 686 contacts traced (individuals who were in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19), 119 402 people have completed the 10 days monitoring period, with no symptoms reported and were de-isolated.

The number of hospitalised people due to Covid-19 in the province stood at 1 235.
