Heidelberg assault: Man expected in court after yet another delay

The assault case against Jaén-Lee Pyne was delayed last week after it emerged that his lawyer’s practising certificate had expired.

The case against Jaén-Lee Pyne (31), who faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property, is expected to continue on Monday after it was once again delayed this past week.

Heidelberg Nigel Heraut reports the trial was set to start on Thursday at the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court.

Legal representative not authorised to practise

The latest delay extends a pattern that has persisted since the matter was first placed on the court roll in January 2023.

To complicate proceedings further, it was revealed that Pyne’s legal representative is not currently authorised to practise law, as her Fidelity Fund certificate expired in December 2024 and has not been renewed.

Magistrate Michael Twala’s announcement left the courtroom — filled with community members eager for a resolution — in disbelief as the case hit another setback.

Case rescheduled

The ongoing delays and repeated changes in legal representation have frustrated those following the case’s progress.

Pyne remains out on bail for the assault-related charges but is in custody for a separate matter.

The court has rescheduled the case for October 20 to allow time for Pyne’s legal counsel to address the certification issue.
