Hijacker shot and killed near KZN tollgate following police chase
A search is underway for the rest of the suspects who pounced on a man in his 60s who pulled over to rest at the Tongaat Toll on the N2.
A suspect was killed by police after playing a part in a hijacking on the N2 in KZN just before 07:00.
The suspect was one of a group of men that shot a man in his 60s during an attempted hijacking at the Tongaat Toll southbound on-ramp.
The driver, who had pulled over to the side of the road to rest, was shot in the leg and was stabilised before being taken to a nearby hospital, says IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick.
Suspects took off on foot and in the hijacked car, with Tongaat SAPS and private security companies giving chase – later killing the man in a shootout.
The remaining suspects were able to escape and police are still trying to track them down.
It is currently unclear how many suspects are at large.
The hijacking is the latest in a series of shootings on the N2 this year, the most recent a high-speed chase and shootout on June 2.
Two people were killed in separate hijacking incidents near the Tongaat Toll and at the Umdloti off-ramp in January.
The Community Emergency Response Team’s Nazir Sadack, who also attended to the scene, urges motorists to avoid using the area as a rest stop.
