Hospitals ‘refuse’ 400kg treatment

A man weighing over 400kg was awaiting for specialised equipment to carry him out of his house in Illiondale, Edenvale, on Gauteng’s East Rand on Tuesday.

Corrie le Grange’s life was in danger, as his kidneys are also failing, Bedfordview Edenvale News reported.

It remains unknown which hospital Le Grange would be taken to, as private institutions allegedly refused to take him in due to his family’s financial constraints.

Le Grange’s fiancée Shammy Rademeyer said all private hospitals told her without a minimum of R100 000 upfront, they would not admit her partner.

Emer-G-Med paramedics were on-scene to help remove Le Grange from his house.

South Africa has an obesity problem, according to Professor Hans de Ridder of the School of Biokinetics Recreation and Sports Science in the North-West University (NWU).

Anthropometry, the science behind measuring people’s bodies, according to De Ridder, plays an important role in determining a country’s level of obesity.

He said the anthropometric data in the country has improved considerably during the last three decades, and South Africa was showing a large increase in overweight and obesity in adults as well as children. De Ridder said research has shown nearly two-thirds of the population was overweight.
