Inmate falls to death during Umzinto prison escape

DCS officials and Saps remain on site in order to quell any potential flare ups.

The Department of Correctional Services has issued a report informing the public of the death of one prisoner who attempted to escape the prison earlier today.

It is believed that the inmate fell off the roof of the building onto the ground and succumbed to his injuries.

“DCS officials and Saps remain on site in order to quell any potential flare ups and the situation is under control. We condemn in strongest possible terms any attempts by inmates to undermine security at the centre,” said the department’s spokesman, Singabakho Nxumalo.

“We will not hesitate to take strong action against those behind such acts.”

Scottburgh Saps station commander, Colonel Ralph Ruiters confirmed the Umzinto prison situation is now under control.

About 88 prisoners have been arrested by Saps with assistance from the prison warders, National Intervention Unit and Public Order Policing.

While violent protest action and looting continues in the mid-South Coast, rioting has begun at the Umzinto prison.

Although there is no official report from authorities at this stage, there is however visual evidence and a part of the building is on fire.

Locals claim prisoners are escaping the prison, but this has yet to be confirmed.

More police have been dispatched to the Umzinto area and several locals have joined forces.
