The circumstances surrounding the death of a 33-year-old woman are being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

The woman was shot and killed while police were conducting raids to recover looted items.

The incident occurred at the Madlala Informal Settlement in Lamontville, Durban on Thursday, July 29.

IPID spokesman, Ndileka Cola, stated that the community members mobilised each other, blocked the exit points with stones, cut the tyres of police vehicles and attacked the police.

“The police allegedly fired warning shots and the woman was later found dead behind one of the shacks, metres away from the road where the police were stationed, with a gunshot wound in her body. IPID continues with the investigation process of this incident,” said Cola.
