The number of South Africans missing after the devastating floods in Nepal on August 27 has been revised to six. The missing include Terricia Govender, an Isipingo Beach resident who was on a pilgrimage, reports South Coast Sun.

Terricia (33) was part of a religious tour group of 12 individuals, comprising pilgrims from different countries. According to reports, the flood hit early in the day in Rasuwa, just north of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, after a glacial lake collapsed and sent a massive downstream flow of water, ice, mud, and debris.

When the flood struck, Terricia was inside the immigration office at the Nepal-Tibet border. More than 2 500 people remain unaccounted for.

Her mother, Linda Govender, said the information they received was that rescue teams cannot access the area where her daughter was last seen.

“I just want to be able to go to Nepal and be there, because for me, it feels like I’m closer to her. As much as everybody is telling us that we shouldn’t go because there’s nothing we can do, there’s nothing I can do here either, except try and raise awareness. I want to be there, and then, hopefully, I can bring her home,” said Linda.

According to reports, heavy rain and fog have hampered rescue operations.
