Kaizer Chiefs’ Luke Fleurs murder: 6 arrested

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement team has made a breakthrough in the investigation into a soccer player’s murder.

Six suspects have been arrested for allegedly hijacking and killing Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the investigating team appointed by Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni arrested six suspects yesterday.

They also recovered the victim’s car.

“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of yesterday morning. The vehicle, which was already stripped, was recovered on Monday,” says Masondo.

“Police believe the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing,” he adds.

An article published by Network News on April 4 states that Fleurs was shot and killed in Honeydew at 20:00 on April 3.

At the time, it was reported that Fleurs, who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI, drove into the petrol station on the corner of 14th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Road.

“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series. A suspect [allegedly] pointed [a firearm at him] and took him out of his vehicle. He shot him once in the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice.”

Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival.

The team, led by the Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner, crime detection, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, includes the Tracking Team, SAPS Provincial Investigation Unit, SAPS National Crime Intelligence, SAPS Drone Unit, Honeydew detectives, Honeydew Crime Intelligence, Community Active Protection Special Operations and Fidelity Specialised Services.

“They have been working around the clock to ensure that the suspects are arrested and brought to book,” says Masondo.

The suspects are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
