Kempton Park court postpones Benoni cops’ extortion case

Three Benoni Flying Squad officers accused of kidnapping and extortion appeared in court as investigations continue.

Three officers from the Benoni Flying Squad, facing charges of kidnapping and extortion, appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Kempton Express reports that, according to the court, the investigating officer is currently in training and has yet to finalise the investigation.

During their previous court appearance on December 3, the trio were each granted bail of R2 000. Their bail was extended following today’s proceedings.

The officers were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on December 2 after allegedly extorting money from a salon owner at Norkem Mall on November 24.

According to IPID, the officers approached a 38-year-old salon owner and questioned her about her business documentation.

She reportedly informed them that the required paperwork was displayed on the wall. The officers then requested her identity document, which she provided.

It is alleged that they later insisted on searching her home.

On arrival, they demanded access to a safe and cash, allegedly extorting R60 000. The salon owner claims she ultimately handed over R42 000.

The matter was later reported to IPID, leading to the officers’ arrests.

The three accused have yet to enter a plea in court.

The case has been postponed to May 30 to allow for further investigation.
