Kempton Park woman arrested for deserting ill baby
Further investigations will be conducted after a woman allegedly left her three-month-old ill baby with strangers in Kempton Park and did not return.
The 25-year-old woman had asked her two neighbours to look after her baby for only a short while and after three days, the woman still had not returned, Kempton Express reported.
The child was left with the strangers with no food, clothes or medication at a block of flats on Voortrekker Road in the Kempton Park CBD.
Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said the two women who were left with the baby had finally decided to report the matter to the authorities.
“Upon checking the baby, the police discovered that his health condition was bad and he had breathing problems. An ambulance was called to the station, and the baby taken to hospital,” said Mtshali.
On January 8, the mother was spotted by the two women, who took her to the police station.
The woman briefly appeared in court on January 12, where she faced child negligence charges.
The court requested further investigations be conducted by the police, upon which the findings would determine whether the mother would be prosecuted or not.
The baby continues to be treated in hospital.
Last week, a case of child abandonment was opened by police in Montclair, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, after a three-day-old infant was found in a hostel.
A security guard had found the abandoned infant while patrolling at the SJ Smith hostel in the Jacobs area, Southlands Sun reported.
The security guard allegedly heard the baby crying and contacted police, who then took the baby boy to the Montclair Police Station.
No arrests were made.
