Kloof SPCA rescues dog with head stuck in tyre rim

A dog named Wheelie is loving the attention she is getting at the SPCA during her recuperation.

A dog was recently rescued from an uncomfortable and terrifying ordeal when the Kloof and Highway SPCA team removed a metal rim from a tyre from around her neck.

The SPCA’s Sarah van Heerden says the Kloof and Highway SPCA witnesses many things that make them wonder how and when it happened.

This was the case when the inspectorate manager received a call from a concerned resident about a dog that has since been named Wheelie.

Wheelie with the tyre rim stuck around her neck.

The man reported that a dog wandered onto his property in Hammarsdale, and he could not believe what he saw – the canine’s head was stuck in a tyre rim.

“Field officer King Ndimande and inspector Lindo Mbele rushed to the property not knowing what to expect. Our clinic team had been alerted, as well as our maintenance team, in case they were needed to assist.

“When she arrived at our SPCA, she was immediately sedated, and the vet, vet nurse and inspectors began to manoeuvre the rim. It was not too long before she was freed,” says Van Heerden.

The next morning, Ferguson says Wheelie greeted the staff with a wagging tail and a grateful heart.

“While she recuperates, she has certainly made herself at home lying in the sun, receiving love and attention from all the staff.

“Wheelie, as we have named her, is an older dog who has had many litters and a tough start to her life, yet she is still affectionate and trusting,” says Van Heerden.
