KZN businessman found not guilty

A businessman charged with crimen injuria, resisting arrest and interfering with police duty had all charges dropped against him in the Ladysmith Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday after it was discovered he was wrongfully arrested.

In September last year, Imran Sader was arrested at his shop in Ladysmith after police allegedly thought he had assaulted a security guard. According to Sader, police officers stormed into the building and assaulted him, Ladysmith Gazette reported.

He was then handcuffed and dragged out of the shop. The incident was captured on CCTV footage and shows a group of about seven police officers dragging Sader out of his butchery.

After his arrest, Sader was released on R500 bail. He claimed he should not have been arrested as he had done nothing.

According to Sader’s attorney, a civil claim against South African Police Service is in the process after Sader reportedly sustained injuries during the arrest.

In May last year, the police minister was ordered to pay R75 000 in damages to a Northern Cape teacher who was wrongfully arrested and detained.

Perpetua Mororo, was arrested and kept in custody after her ex-husband had accused her of stealing household goods in 2011.
