KZN CPF chairperson target of alleged hit
A man allegedly plotted to murder former Martin Luther King Jr Peace Award winner Selvan Chetty.
A man (39) from Izotsha in KZN has been arrested and charged for conspiracy to murder social activist Selvan Chetty.
The man made his first appearance in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday last week and the case was postponed for bail application on Thursday. He remains in custody.
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo says Hawks members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Unit assisted Port Shepstone SAPS in an undercover operation which led to the man’s arrest.
Chetty, who was Tweni Community Police Forum’s chairperson, has recently been appointed as the CPF executive chairperson of the Port Shepstone Police Station.
He is an active member of the South Coast community and is known far-and-wide for his humanitarian work.
In 2021, the well-known activist received the Ammen Award for his contribution to socio-economic upliftment.
In 1996, he was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr Peace Award and in 1997 the Sanlam Sunday Tribune Award for Peace Work and Bridge-building. He also served as chief whip of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
