KZN hostage drama: Hostages released, complex combed for culprits
Staff of a supermarket in Mandini were held hostage by a group of armed men this morning. A group were released earlier with more hostages freed when SAPS breached the store.
Six hostages are being treated for hypothermia after being released from the cold-room of a Boxer Cash and Carry store in Sundumbili, KZN in what remains an active crime scene.
The staff were accosted while opening the store this morning, says IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick.
“The hostages who were released have been taken to a hospital in KwaDukuza,” says Meyrick.
Shortly thereafter, another three hostages were freed when police breached the store.
“According to the staff, there are four suspects who took them hostage. They are believed to be in store and a search is currently ongoing,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Dylan Meyrick.
The Citizen reported that a security guard who was part of the group that was held hostage, managed to call for backup, alerting authorities.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker says a task team is sweeping through the complex, clearing shops to try and locate the suspects.
The motive behind the incident has yet to be established.
