KZN man shoots girlfriend, then self
A case of murder and an inquest docket have been opened after a man allegedly shot dead his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in a commune on Louis Botha Avenue in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.
Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said preliminary evidence suggested the man, Mbongeleni Shandu, 48, shot his girlfriend, Thokozile Mgenge, 33, and then himself. They both died on the scene, Zululand Observer reported.
Mdlalose added an argument allegedly ensued between the couple.
The bodies were discovered by Mgenge’s younger sister, who said the couple had been seeing each other for almost five years.
Shandu was apparently visiting Mgenge at the commune, where she had been staying for about three months.
Police recovered the .38 revolver that was registered in Shandu’s name on the scene.
In a separate incident, a man shot dead his wife before turning the gun on himself in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, in January.
Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said the police received a complaint about a fight at a house at 1pm.
He said when the police arrived, the man shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself. They both died at the scene.
“The motive of the fight was unknown. A case of murder and an inquest were opened,” he said.
